Zug police dog rescues strongly hypothermic youngster

A young man was rescued from Lake Zug thanks to the attentiveness of police dog "Wyk". The 17-year-old had to be admitted to the hospital.

Police dog "Wyk" proved his fine nose in the early morning of Wednesday, 5 June 2019. Shortly after 5 a.m., the German shepherd dog was on a foot patrol with his dog handler at the Alpenquai in Zug.

Suddenly, and without any apparent reason, the dog steadily pulled on its leash and wanted to run towards the lake. He indicated to his dog handler that he had scented something. When the police officer checked in the direction indicated by Wyk, he saw two hands clinging to the lakeside wall.

The two of them rushed to the spot and found a young man clinging to the lake wall with both hands and up to his waist in the water. They were able to rescue the man with the help of another police patrol. The 17-year-old was very hypothermic at the time, but still able to speak. He was treated by the Zug rescue service and taken to the hospital. According to investigations so far, the young man had been on a night-out, and wanted to go swimming on his way home.

As a reward for his part in the rescue, "Wyk" received a fine Cervelat from his master.
