Uncooled ash leads to fire in the Sonneggstrasse

There was a fire in an apartment on the Sonneggstrasse in Cham on Thursday morning. Five people were thereby checked for smoke poisoning, and the apartment is no longer usable.

At around 9 am on Thursday morning, 20 January 2022, the Operations Control Centre of the Zug Police received several reports that an apartment on the Sonneggstrasse in Cham was burning. The resident was in the apartment at that time.

When the first members of the Cham fire brigade arrived on the scene, the resident had already succeeded in extinguishing the flames with the help of neighbours, according to the police. Due to suspicion of smoke poisoning, five people were examined medically by the Zug Ambulance Service. The police report confirmed that these examinations were negative, and that no-one had to be hospitalised.

Amount of damage not yet known
The fire created a great deal of smoke in the apartment, and the affected apartment was de-smoked by respiratory protection teams of the Cham fire brigade using ventilators. The material damage is considerable, but cannot yet be quantified. The premises are no longer habitable.

The forensic service of the Zug police was called in to clarify the cause of the fire. The investigation revealed that the fire had broken out in the sitting area, and that furniture had caught fire due to ashes that had not completely cooled.
