There are now 794 refugees from Ukraine in the canton

The canton of Zug must offer a place for around 1.5% of the refugees from Ukraine who have fled the war. Zug has so far implemented the mandate of the federal government.

More than 55,000 asylum seekers from Ukraine are now in Switzerland. The majority of these are women and children, because, as is well known, men in Ukraine are banned from leaving the country. According to the Building Directorate, the canton of Zug must provide around 1.5% of Swiss places for people from Ukraine.

The canton of Zug found what it was looking for in Menzingen, where the monastery can accommodate 250 people from Ukraine, and where an additional 120 people can be accommodated in a pavilion located in the village centre. And there are another 100 places for refugees In the former Hotel Waldheim in Risch, which the canton has rented.

The canton still has enough places
On 8 June 2022, there were 794 refugees with status S in the canton of Zug. Of these, 566 people were accommodated privately and 228 in collective accommodation. The federal allocations of refugees declined In May 2022,. For this reason, the Canton of Zug currently has enough places in cantonal accommodation.

All places created so far are based on fixed-term rental contracts, however, and represent only temporary use, with the first cantonal accommodations having to be returned to the owners at the end of this year,. New places must be found for the Ukrainians affected by this. If the war lasts longer, the canton of Zug is therefore dependent on further suitable housing.

Expansion of capacities
As of the end of May 2022, the capacities in the north wing of the old cantonal hospital in Zug, which runs parallel to the Artherstrasse, have been expanded, and 110 places have been created. In addition, temporary residential containers will be installed on the site, which will provide space for around 170 people. And around 30 places are also available in the canton's own "Sennhütte" on the Zugerberg.

In addition, the canton of Zug has acquired a modular building that can accommodate 410 people who have fled the war in Ukraine. The necessary building permit procedures are currently underway for the construction of this modular building.
