Panic buying due to Corona virus

Consumers are stocking up on canned goods and pasta at Migros and Co due to the spread of the Corona virus, with mineral water, preserves and baby food being currently very popular products in Swiss supermarkets. The increased demand could actually cushion the impending slump in the economy!

The current situation is making great demands on Migros employees, said a Migros spokesman on request from CH Media. The number of staff in the distribution centres has already been increased.

The reason for this is the Corona virus, which is causing (unnecessary!!) uncertainty about the food supply for many people in Switzerland. Migros, Denner, Coop and Aldi all report that they have sold more long-lasting food than usual in the past few days. These include mineral water and preserves, but also milk products. The situation in the branches has already eased again in Ticino, reports Aldi. There are no delivery bottlenecks for any of the four companies approached. Water from the tap is also perfectly safe to drink throughout Switzerland, and is also very healthy.

Due to the spread of the corona virus, pasta and other durable foods are being bought in increased quantities.

While the corona virus is having a negative impact on both the global and the Swiss economy, this increased demand in the supermarkets could actually cushion this somewhat. This was stated by Eric Scheidegger of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) on Saturday at a media conference in Bern.
