Offences against the Covid-19 regulations

Not wearing a mask, carrying out a banned event and too many people in one pile: two of these violations each resulted in a substantial fine.

The Zug Public Prosecutor's Office has recently had to deal with three violations of the current regulations in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Two of them resulted in substantial fines.

The "most harmless" of the three offences concerned a young man from nearby ‘Säuliamt’ who didn’t wear a mask at Zug railway station on an evening last March. According to the penalty order, the man has to pay a fine of CHF 100.

A somewhat more complex case, however, was the incident a few days later at the Postplatz in Zug, which involved the unveiling of a work of art with invited guests. As it turned out, this event was not approved in this form. The event was the presentation of the sculpture "The Mask of Dante" by the Russian artist Vasily Klyukin. 14 people took part, which violated the regulation in force at the time. The organiser of this vernissage was fined CHF 1,500, plus the procedural costs of CHF 300.

Too many people at one table
The last violation of this trilogy of penalty orders took place a few weeks later: on a Friday evening in May, a restaurant owner entertained almost 30 guests in the outdoor area, whereby seven of them were sitting together at the same table. In addition, two other guests stayed in the interior of the restaurant, where they are said to have been served. As if that wasn't enough, the owner allowed music to play from inside the restaurant through the open door around midnight at a volume that – according to the penalty order – was sufficient to disturb the peace at night.

The fallible host has to pay a fine of CHF 1100, plus procedural costs of CHF 300 for violating the Covid-19 ordinance in force at the time and for disturbing the peace.
