Modular building on the Lorzenallmend soon be ready for occupancy

350 people seeking protection will find space in the modular building on the Lorzenallmend in Zug from the end of August. Two classrooms are also planned. The local population will have the opportunity to visit the building at the beginning of September.

The Canton of Zug has acquired a modular building that can accommodate around 350 women, children and men who have fled the war in Ukraine. The three-story, second-hand modular building has a total floor space of 6,000 square meters. This can be seen from a media release jointly written by government councillors Florian Weber (Construction Directorate) and Andreas Hostettler (Interior Directorate).

The building was formerly used as a temporary solution for a retirement home in the canton of Lucerne. The modular construction is a fully developed residential building, with rooms including sanitary facilities, ancillary and lounge rooms, as well as kitchen, laundry and service rooms.

Timely completion
No objections were received against the planning application for the building on the Lorzenallmend in Zug, and the City of Zug granted the building permit in September 2022. After a short planning and construction phase, the construction department was able to complete the asylum accommodation on the Outer Lorzenallmend on time and within budget.

From the end of August, refugees from Ukraine will move in there. The city of Zug is setting up two classrooms in a modular building so that classes can be held locally by the city schools in Zug. From mid-September, 14 children are expected to take part in the lessons.

A “temporary relief”
The public will have the opportunity to visit the modular construction and get in touch with the responsible political leaders and the experts involved from 5 p.m. on Friday, 8th September. Residents of the city of Zug were informed about the accommodation on the Outer Lorzenallmend at an information event last November.

The additional places are absolutely necessary, as various temporary rental contracts for other accommodations expire this year. Government Councillor (Regierungsrat) Andreas Hostettler is quoted as follows in the statement: "It is increasingly a challenge to find living space to accommodate people from the refugee and asylum sector. The new building will provide temporary relief.

Volunteers needed
The canton would welcome it if the population becomes involved through civic commitment. Anyone who would like to volunteer can find a contact person at the FRW Intercultural Dialogue association: ukraine.stzug@frwzg.ch.

In addition, the Westwind neighbourhood association and the parish of St.Johannes will be present during the public visit.
