Everything has to go – Winter Universiade selling off its leftover merchandise

The public can now purchase unneeded articles from the Universiade at the Messe Luzern. 7,000 pieces are still available.

After the Winter Universiade 2021 in Central Switzerland had to be cancelledjust two weeks before the planned start due to the new Omicron virus variant, the Organization Committee is now offering the remaining merchandise items for sale.

"Instead of letting the goods become discoloured, we prefer to sell them," says Urs Hunkeler, Managing Director of the Organisation Committee of the Winter Universiade. Although sales had already begun before the planned start of the Universiade, a big sales boost was expected during the event – which of course did not take place. "That's why we still have many articles that we want to liquidate," says Urs Hunkeler.

7,000 items left
Around 7,000 objects are still left, including, among other things, insulating drinking bottles, wool hats, socks, caps or the mascot Wuli. In addition, the remainder of the volunteer clothing is also being sold, as a set or as individual pieces. The set costs CHF 120, and includes a ski jacket, a mid-layer (warming garment under the jacket), a cap, two T-shirts and a water bottle. Urs Hunkeler is optimistic with regard to sales: "They are beautiful items." And the interest is great internally. "The volunteers didn't miss out." Fans of the Winter Universiade are now to be addressed, but also the general population – also with regard to the Christmas business.

The articles will be sold in Hall 1 of the Lucerne Trade Fair. Because all the employees are still there at the moment, merchandise sales will become a "substitute task" for them instead of the Universiade, according to Urs Hunkeler. "We’ll let ourselves be surprised how things go."

Merchandise sales will take place from 20 to 22 December, between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Messe Luzern, Hall 1, Entrance Gate 12. Payment is only possible with debit, credit card or Twint.
