Striking items of furniture by local apprentices on display

A number of exquisite and unusual items of modern furniture are currently on display at the Parkhotel on Industriestrasse in the city.

The works exhibited have all been designed and made by young apprentice joiners who entered a competition organised by the canton of Zug branch of the Swiss Master Carpenters’ and Furniture Manufacturers’ Association. One only has to look at them to see not only how imaginative the apprentices were, but also how skilful they were in making them.

The pieces have all been made by local apprentices in the second and third years of their training. There are no particular open hours to the exhibition in the hotel lobby, you can just pop in at any time, but do not wait too long as it closes on Friday evening.

The theme of this year’s competition was “Old and New”, the idea being that wood already used for something else be re-used in creating a new item of furniture. Hence one joiner, Malik Hendler, used parts of old planks to add a retro touch to a modern sideboard (photograph), with which he won the prize in second-year category.

Equally highly imaginative was a sofa-bed made from a small sailing boat made by Lars Weber. Then you must see the mirror corner cabinet made from an old window frame by Simon Oeschger.

And you will not find anything like these items anywhere else; each one is unique.
