Total write-off after engine fire

A fire broke out in a moving car. No one was injured, but the vehicle was a total loss. The fire was probably caused by a technical defect.

A 73-year-old was driving on the A14 motorway in the direction of Lucerne shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday afternoon (13 September 2022). The driver noticed a drop in the performance of his car after passing the Rütihof junction, and stopped in the area of a construction site there. Immediately afterwards, smoke and flames appeared from the engine.

The 73-year-old was able to leave the vehicle in time and fight the fire with the help of a machinist from the construction site and his tanker truck. The smouldering fire was ultimately extinguished by the Zug Base Fire Brigade (FFZ), who arrived on the scene a little later.

Fortunately, no one was injured, but the car was a complete write-off. While the fire brigade was dealing with the fire, traffic had to be guided past the site in a single lane, causing  a tailback of traffic. The cause of the fire was probably a technical defect.

Members of the Zug Base fire brigade (FFZ), as well as employees of Zentras, a private towing company and the Zug police were on duty at the scene.
