Gotthard Tunnel closed in both directions

The Gotthard road tunnel has been closed to road traffic from Sunday afternoon, as reported by the Federal Roads Office (Astra). The duration of the closure is still unknown.

After traffic chaos on Sunday evening in front of the tunnel portals, the Astra made the following announcement just after midnight: The 17-kilometer-long Gotthard road tunnel has been closed to traffic in both directions from Sunday afternoon. The exact extent of the damage is not yet known.

Concrete pieces came loose near the tunnel portal and fell onto the road. After corresponding reports were received by the cantonal police, the tunnel was closed in both directions, the Federal Roads Office said.

An initial inventory shows a crack in the false ceiling over a length of 25 metres. The exact extent of the damage and the cause are not currently clear, Astra continues. Those responsible for the Astra are working hard to investigate and repair the damage.

The tunnel will remain closed for safety reasons until further notice. Duration of closure unknown. Traffic will be rerouted via the San Bernardino.
