Commemoration and ringing of bells on the anniversary of the Zug assassination

In memory of the 2001 attack on the Government Building in Zug, the government council is inviting people to a memorial event in the St. Oswald Church in Zug on September 27th.

September 27th marks the anniversary of the attack in the Zug Government Building in 2001 (Zuger Attentat). Three members of the Government Council (Regierungsrat) and eleven members of the Cantonal Council (Kantonsrat) were killed, and 15 other people were injured, some seriously.

As in previous years, the Government Council is organising a memorial event this year, which will take place at 7 p.m. on 27th September in the St. Oswald Church in Zug. It will be led by Zug City Priest (Stadtpfarrer) Reto Kaufmann and Hans-Jörg Riwar, pastor of the Reformed Church of Zug. Philipp Emanuel Gietl (organ) and Jonas Iten (cello) will provide the musical background.

Further signs of remembrance are planned for 27th September. Church bells will be rung at midday in the canton of Zug in memory of the victims of the attack and all victims of violence around the world. Furthermore, the graves of the deceased and the “Einschnitt” memorial near the government building will be decorated with flowers. The Zug flag will also fly at half-mast on the government building.

With the memorial event, the government council wants to send a signal of appreciation for the victims and express sympathy for all those affected. Public remembrance is important, because the attack was also an attack on the values of our society.
