New uniform police ID cards to be introduced

As from Saturday 1 December new uniform police ID cards are being issued to officers in the six central Swiss cantons, i.e. Lucerne, Schwyz, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Uri and Zug. In addition to increasing uniformity, the new ID cards will also mean further costs able to be saved. It was back in 2012 that police uniforms also became standard in the afore-mentioned six cantons.

Instead of separate coats-of-arms for each of the cantons appearing on the credit-card-sized IDs, those of all six cantons appear together, though some not in their entirety. The canton the holder operates in is also shown on both the front and the rear of the cards. Also indicated is whether the holder is a police officer, security assistant or civil employee.

The police also issued the following guidelines in connection with being questioned by people who purport to be  police officers.

Be wary if being spoken to in High German by an officer who claims he is a local one.
If you are suspicious about his real identity, do not hesitate to call the police using the 117 emergency number.

In order to avoid being deceived by someone who purports to be a police officer:

do not provide him with any information about your personal details or financial matters and never hand over cash or valuables to people of whose identity you are unsure,
and never hide money or valuables in a public place.

Finally, inform the police immediately if you think you have been the victim of fraud or attempted fraud.

While on policing, it was decided at a session of the cantonal parliament on Thursday that the sub-stations earmarked for closure in Menzingen, Steinhausen and Hünenberg will now remain open.
