Car catches fire after crashing into bridge

A driver had a lucky escape when the car he was driving caught fire late on Saturday evening.

The incident happened shortly after 11pm as the 36-year-old driver was on Bannholzstrasse proceeding towards Hintergeissboden on the Zugerberg. For reasons yet unknown, the driver suddenly lost control over his vehicle and collided with the supporting pillar of a bridge. Nevertheless, the vehicle was still drivable and he set off again, only for it catch fire a few moments later. The Zug Voluntary Fire Brigade was duly summoned, and they managed to put out the fire.

As mentioned, the driver remained unhurt but damage to the tune of tens of thousands of francs was caused to the car. Subsequent investigation showed that inflammable liquids had penetrated the engine area, and this had caused the fire.

In a separate incident, two drivers escaped unhurt after the cars they were driving were involved in a collision in the city centre on Thursday evening (second photograph).

The incident happened shortly after 8.30pm as a 31-year-old driver coming from Baar was proceeding along Industriestrasse intending to turn left into Lüssiweg. When he noticed the traffic lights were at green, he went on to turn left, assuming, wrongly, that the traffic light for oncoming traffic was showing red. Hence the collision.
Fortunately, as mentioned, neither of the drivers was hurt, but damage to their vehicles amounted to CHF15,000.

In a further incident on Sunday, a 32-year-old woman driver was injured as she was involved in a collision with another car at the junction of Allenwindenstrasse with Ägeristrasse in Baar (third photograph).

This incident, which happened shortly before 1.30 pm, led not only to damage amounting to several thousands of francs but also to Ägeristrasse being subject to alternating one-way traffic flow for a while.

Anyone who witnessed this latter incident is kindly asked to call the police without delay on 041 728 41 41.
