Confiserie Speck in Metalli centre re-opens today

After an eight-week re-fit costing CHF 1.3 million, the branch of the Confiserie Speck in the Metalli centre re-opens today.

The most major difference customers will notice is that the confiserie is now accessible from Metallstrasse itself, this entrance leading to an interior in warm brown colours with brick-like wallpaper and a selection of black- and-white photographs by Swiss photographer Christian Reichenbach on display.

As proprietor Walter Speck (photograph) explained, the interior is now 60 square metres bigger. In addition to two rows of tables, there is also a raised lounge area with upholstered seating where customers can eat, drink, relax and chat and where there are more photographs, this time of the former Zug Enamel and Metalware factory, founded in 1881, which once stood on this site. What had become the Verzinkerei AG company subsequently became the Metallholding AG in 1956 before being renamed V-Zug in the Seventies.

As before, the self-service area, now with a longer counter, is to the mall side of the confiserie, with greater opportunity for a wide range of home-made quality products to be on display. What is interesting, too, is that part of the floor in the sales area is made of cherry stones, the confiserie is, of course, renowned for its Zug cherry cake (Zuger Kirschtorte) with real kirsch. In addition to the re-vamping of the sales and café area, the kitchen, toilets and electrics have all been renovated.

In all, there are five Speck confiseries in the city of Zug, the main one being on Alpenstrasse near the station. Then there is the Monsieur Baguette Bistro on Baarerstrasse, the Zum Wilden Mann bakery on Neugasse and the gelateria by the harbour. This branch in the Metalli centre dates back to 1987, while the first Speck café opened over 120 years ago.
