Where you can still park free of charge

Since the beginning of this year, charges apply at most public parking spaces between the hours of 7am to 7pm, on Sundays, too. However, there are one or two places not too far from the centre where it is still possible to park free of charge.

Most of the free places available on Sunday, some 200, are available at the former gas-work site (Gaswerkareal) near the Bossard Arena on Aabachstrasse. Other free parking places with no time limit can be found by the Cantonal School or at the Theilerhaus on Hofstrasse. Then there are also the parking places by the BIZ careers advice centre at number 21 Baarerstrasse.

Further outside the central area, there are a few places where you can park without charge and without time limit, and not just on Sundays, but throughout the week, too, for example near the Verenakapelle (chapel), by the Strandbad and Trubikon lidos, at the Brüggli campsite and at the Schützenhaus (shooting range) in Choller.

It is at this latter-named location that things are about to change, however. As it has been noticed that many people leave their cars here and go on to use public transport to get to work, the Corporation of Zug, as owner of the site, is in negotiation with the city to introduce a maximum parking time of five or eight hours, as Daniel Schwerzmann, the secretary to the Corporation, explained.

For those who do not mind walking a little further to get to the Old Town or lake shore, there are places in more outlying areas where you can park free of charge on both Saturdays and Sundays, unlike the two-hour limit imposed between Mondays and Fridays. As to whether you might find your car boxed in when various popular events take place, there is a risk of this (especially in summer when people go bathing) though there have been no reports of this so far, as councillor Urs Raschle explained.
