Think catering at lidos is all about sausages and chips?

Last Saturday the new season opened at the beach lido in Cham, the café there now under new management with lots of fresh ideas.

The new managing director of the café is Romana Müller, who in winter runs the Rossweid mountain restaurant in the Sörenberg skiing area of the canton of Lucerne. Previously, the 28-year-old chef, who comes from the Aegeri Valley, used to work at the Seeliken lake-side lido in Zug, but decided to take on the tenancy of the Strandbad in Cham along with Pasquale Sciangula (on the right in the photograph) and his girlfriend Marina
Fischer, not forgetting the assistance of swimming supervisor Michael Freisager.

Prior to its opening last week, all was looking very spick and span, not just the pool but all the recreational equipment, all set off against freshly mown lawns, spring flowers and the glinting of the water in the pool and the lake.

As 30-year-old Fischer announced, “We are bringing a breath of fresh air to the café,” indeed both she and her 38-year-old boyfriend are professional chefs with many years’ experience catering at the Skihütte Schwarzenegg and at the afore-mentioned Rossweid, too; they are also in charge at the pool in Nebikon in the canton of Lucerne.

All have been very busy in recent days as new furniture has been delivered and new décor with flowers, candles and lanterns set up, “All very cheerful and summery with a hint of the sea,” said Müller.

Talking about the new menu, she went on to mention that the food on offer would be regionally sourced, with the Amstad bakery supplying some of its products and beer coming from the brewery in Baar. As for meat, this comes solely from Switzerland. “We want to show that not all outdoor swimming pool cafés supply only sausages and chips,” she said, citing “Badi” (lido) burgers, vitamin salads and chicken strips. Even the iced tea is home-made from a local source.

Müller also has plans for a number of events to take place later this summer, for example cocktails and live music every other Friday night in July and August. “We want our guests to have a lovely holiday feeling,” she said, adding how she and her fellow tenants really like working in places where people come to enjoy themselves.
