Sale of striking number-plates brings in almost CHF 1million

As previously reported, this year the Cantonal Road Traffic Licensing Department (SVAKZ) has been able to auction off striking number-plates for cars and motorcycles for the first time, with one number-plate alone, ZG 10, going for CHF 233,000. This broke the previous record price for a number plate, that of VS 1, issued by the canton of Wallis, which was bought by property developer for CHF 160,000.

As Markus Feer, the head of the SVAKZ, said, CHF 960,610 has been raised by the first three number-plate auctions. “This has been very pleasant surprise,” he said, “as we were only expecting CHF 40,000.” This from the sale of 48 car number-plates and 19 for motorcycles.

In addition to ZG 10 going for so much, ZG 18 went for CHF 128,000 and ZG 63 for CHF 63,000. The lowest price raised was CHF 500 for a car number-plate and CHF 400 for a motorcycle one.

There are reserve prices on some of them, with ZG 11111 having a higher one than ZG 4852 for example. Then, if motorists so wish, they can order a special number-plate, one indicating a birth date for example; so far, 23 of these have been sold.

The next number-plate auction is to take place between Thursday 22 and Wednesday 28 November with five for motorcycles and 15 for cars on offer, including ZG 28. “Whether this will lead to another record, we will have to wait and see,” said Feer.
