Police praise civil courage of local resident

Police have praised a local man for the civil courage he showed which led to an exhibitionist being arrested.

A man had been spotted several times in recent months exposing himself in the Röhrliberg area of Cham. It was on the evening of Thursday 5 July that he was spotted again by someone who had seen him flashing before. He duly called the police and engaged the exhibitionist in conversation hoping officers would arrive in time to arrest the culprit and this was indeed the case.

The exhibitionist turned out to be a 48-year old Swiss man. He was detained and questioned to ascertain whether he might have been responsible for previous incidents of exhibitionism in that area between November 2017 and June 2018.

Commenting on this case, the police praised the action of the man who reported the flasher and maintained conversation with him until they arrived.

What the police would also like to emphasise, however, is that members of the public should not involve themselves in any acts of heroism in an attempt to detain a suspect. However, rather than looking away, a quick call to the police on a mobile phone, providing them with information about suspects’ appearance or direction in which they left the scene, for example, can be of immense help to them. Otherwise, providing first aid or asking another passer-by to help, can also assist.
