Far too much plastic wrapping used

The Young Alternative Party of Zug has written an open letter to the manager of the Migros store in the Metalli centre in the city complaining about the excess use of plastic, particularly in the wrapping of vegetables.

In a further communication to the press, criticising the unnecessary and excess use of plastic packaging in the retail business in general, the young environmentalists warned that, by 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans.

The party is calling for those in power to introduce restrictions on the use of plastic for wrapping. “There is far too much used in wrapping vegetables,” said Gurbetelli Yener, a co-leader of the Zug Young Alternatives, as Luzian Franzini, a member of the party’s board and co-leader of the Young Green Party of Switzerland, added that a steering tax should be levied on plastic, which would lead to ecologically-grown produce becoming cheaper.

The party went on to suggest that there were alternatives to the excessive use of plastic, for example organic produce could simply have labels stuck on, or be stamped. If plastic did have to be used, then it was better to use PET as this can be recycled.
