Things to Do This Autumn 2026
Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of year in Switzerland. The days may be getting shorter, but the landscape comes alive in shades of gold, orange and red, while markets, seasonal food and traditional events give us plenty of reasons to get outdoors.
From a walk through the autumn forests of the Zugerberg to pumpkin sculptures, Swiss truffles and traditional chestnut markets, here are some of our favourite things to do this autumn in and around Zug.
Enjoy the Autumn Colours on the Zugerberg
Few places around Zug are more beautiful in autumn than the Zugerberg. As the leaves begin to change colour, the forest paths and open landscapes offer wonderful views across Lake Zug and towards the Alps.
The moorland around the Zugerberg is particularly interesting at this time of year. The protected landscape is home to a variety of plants and wildlife, and the crisp autumn air makes it an ideal place for a leisurely walk.
Whether you opt for a short stroll or a longer hike, take the Zugerberg funicular from Zug and simply enjoy being outdoors.
Discover the World Beneath the Ground
If the weather isn't cooperating, head underground instead. The Höllgrotten caves in Baar are a fascinating natural attraction and a great autumn outing.
The caves were formed over thousands of years and are filled with stalactites, stalagmites and unusual rock formations. Inside, temperatures remain around 10°C, making the caves a refreshing escape in summer and a cosy adventure on a chilly autumn day.
The Höllgrotten are open until the end of October, so don't leave your visit too late.
Visit the Swiss Truffle Market
Autumn has a particular aroma, and few ingredients capture the season quite like truffles.
On Saturday, 10 October, Baar will host the Zug Truffle Market at Schulhausplatz Marktgasse. Around 18 market stalls will offer fresh Swiss Burgundy truffles and a selection of truffle specialities, while the food area will serve dishes including truffle risotto and truffle sausages.
There will also be a demonstration with truffle dogs, giving visitors an insight into how these sought-after little treasures are found.
The market takes place from 9am to 4pm.
Step Into a Pumpkin Wonderland
Pumpkins are synonymous with autumn, and the annual Jucker Farm pumpkin exhibition has become something of a Swiss autumn tradition.
This year's theme is "GUTE REISE", with spectacular pumpkin sculptures inspired by travel. Expect everything from ships and caravans to planes and other imaginative creations, surrounded by thousands of pumpkins in every shape and colour.
The exhibition runs at Juckerhof in Seegräben from 19 September to 25 October, and at Bächlihof in Jona from 12 September to 1 November 2026.
There is plenty more to enjoy besides the sculptures, including pumpkin specialities, carving stations and seasonal events. At Juckerhof, the popular Pumpkin Light Nights take place on selected Friday and Saturday evenings throughout October.
Travel Back to the Middle Ages
On 4 October 2026, Museum Burg Zug will take part in Swiss Castles Day, this year with the theme "Travel".
The day marks the closing of the museum's exhibition hûs, stat, fëld – The Middle Ages in Central Switzerland, and visitors can enjoy special guided tours and activities throughout the day.
It is a lovely opportunity to discover a little more about the history of Zug while enjoying one of the city's most atmospheric historic buildings. The programme runs from 10am to 5pm.
Experience the Zuger Messe
For many people in the region, autumn simply wouldn't be autumn without the Zuger Messe.
The 53rd Zuger Messe takes place from 24 October to 1 November 2026 at the Stierenmarktareal in Zug. With around 80,000 visitors each year, it is the largest autumn exhibition in Central Switzerland, bringing together exhibitors, special displays, gastronomy and entertainment.
It is an easy way to spend a few hours when the weather turns cooler – and a particularly good option for families.
Celebrate the Chestnut
If you love autumn food, make a trip to Greppen on 25 October for the Chestene Chilbi.
Held on the fourth Sunday of October each year, it is the largest chestnut market in German-speaking Switzerland, with around 60 market and food stalls dedicated to the sweet chestnut.
Of course, there are roasted chestnuts, but there is much more to discover: chestnut bread, pastries, pasta, honey, sausages, crêpes and even chestnut beer and liqueur.
The market runs from 10am to 5pm. For an especially scenic autumn day, combine your visit with a boat trip on Lake Lucerne and continue by bus to Greppen.
Take a Walk Through Seleger Moor
Just outside Zug, Park Seleger Moor in Rifferswil is another beautiful destination for an autumn walk.
The park is known for its rhododendrons and azaleas, but its woodland paths and peaceful atmosphere make it worthwhile beyond the spring flowering season too. In autumn, the changing colours create a completely different landscape.
It is the kind of place where you don't really need a plan – just comfortable shoes, a little time and hopefully some sunshine.
Experience a Very Swiss Tradition at Morgarten
For something a little different, head to Morgarten on 15 November 2026 for the 112th Morgartenschiessen.
Held every year since 1912, the traditional 300-metre shooting event attracts more than 1,200 participants from across Switzerland. Visitors are welcome to watch from the designated areas around the Morgarten monument.
The event also includes traditional food, music and other activities, making it an interesting insight into a very particular part of Swiss culture.
And Finally… Enjoy the Flavours of Autumn
Perhaps the simplest way to enjoy autumn is to eat it.
This is the season for pumpkin soup, wild game, mushrooms, chestnuts, apples and, of course, Swiss truffles. Across the region, restaurants begin changing their menus to reflect the season, making autumn an excellent time to discover local cuisine.
So whether you spend the day hiking through golden forests, searching for the perfect pumpkin, browsing a traditional market or simply sitting down to a warming seasonal meal, autumn around Zug offers plenty to enjoy.
Wrap up, get outside and make the most of it – winter will be here soon enough.
