Things to Do This Autumn 2025
Autumn in Switzerland is a season of contrasts: crisp mornings and golden afternoons, vibrant festivals and quiet hikes through nature. From seasonal delicacies to cultural highlights, there’s no better time to get outside, discover traditions, and savour the beauty of the season. Whether you stay close to Zug or venture a little further, here are some of the best experiences awaiting you this autumn.
Moor Hike Zugerberg
The Zugerberg moorland is so enchanting that it has been included in the national inventory of moorland landscapes of outstanding beauty and importance. A walk through this mire landscape offers first-class insights into a fragile ecosystem. Dwarf shrubs such as broom heather, blueberry and bilberry characterise the terrain, and with a bit of luck, you may spot birds like the willow warbler, tree pipit or whinchat. The crisp air, golden trees and serene atmosphere make it one of the region’s most beautiful hikes this season.
Autumn Fairs
Autumn is also fair season in Central Switzerland. The Lozärner Määs (Lucerne Trade Fair) takes place from 4 to 19 October 2025, attracting nearly half a million visitors with more than a hundred market stalls, food vendors and a lively funfair – a vibrant celebration of Swiss tradition. Closer to home, the Zuger Messe follows from 25 October to 2 November 2025. One of the canton’s biggest annual events, it brings together exhibitions, culinary specialties, entertainment and family activities – a true highlight for locals and visitors alike.
A Taste of Luxury
On 4 October 2025, Baar’s Schulhausplatz turns into a paradise for foodies. Around 20 stalls showcase fresh Swiss Burgundy truffles, exclusive truffle specialties and gourmet delicacies, while a lively festival kitchen serves dishes like creamy truffle risotto and grilled truffle sausages, paired with fine Italian wines. The Zug Truffle Market is a festive day full of aromas, flavours and indulgence – all dedicated to the world of truffles.
Nature’s Force
Step into another world at the Höllgrotten caves in Baar, open until 31 October 2025. Formed over thousands of years, the dripstone caves stay a cool 10°C year-round. Wrap up warm and discover the magical underground formations — a perfect all-weather outing.

Swiss Castles Day
On 5 October 2025, castles across Switzerland open their doors for Swiss Castles Day, offering guided tours, interactive programmes and family activities. Closer to home, our nearest and dearest is Burg Zug. The winding castle on the edge of Zug’s Old Town is the oldest surviving secular building in the city and one of its landmarks. Once the seat of medieval lords and later the residence of prominent Zug families, it has housed a museum since 1983 – making it the perfect place to step into local history this autumn.
Sam Fuin – End of Summer Celebration
On 24 October 2025, the municipality of Risch and Roche once again host Sam Fuin on the Buonas peninsula. This Celtic-inspired festival marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Expect Irish music, children’s storytelling, hearty food and drink, and atmospheric fire rituals – all set against the backdrop of a medieval castle. A magical way to welcome the darker half of the year.
Pumpkins Galore
Autumn without pumpkins? Unthinkable! At Jucker Farm, pumpkins of all shapes, colours and sizes are turned into stunning works of art. This year’s exhibition theme is “Let’s Play”, showcased across two of their four farm locations. For the full experience, head to the Juckerhof or Bächlihof, both offering a restaurant, a farm shop and more.
Whimsical Adventure
The Park Seleger Moor in Rifferswil is a riot of autumn colours across more than 120,000 m². Wander winding paths, spot wildlife, and pause at the kiosk or barbecue areas. Seasonal highlights include guided tours, wreath-making workshops, fondue evenings and other unique experiences.
Going Nuts for Chestnuts
October is chestnut season, and the Chestene-Chilbi in Greppen (26 October 2025) is the largest chestnut market in German-speaking Switzerland. Just 25 minutes from Zug, it’s the perfect place to enjoy roasted chestnuts, gather recipe inspiration, or pick up supplies for autumn crafts.
Whether you’re carving pumpkins, tasting roasted chestnuts, wandering through moorland or stepping back in time at a castle, autumn in and around Zug offers countless opportunities to enjoy the season. So pull on a warm jumper, breathe in the crisp air, and make the most of these colourful months — because autumn in Switzerland is simply too good to spend indoors.
