What looks like brutalist concrete plinth will provide children with endless fun

A new water feature has been revealed on Postplatz in the city. What may look like a brutalist concrete plinth will actually provide children with endless fun.

With the reconfiguration of Postplatz in recent months, it has been looking rather bare but now this new attraction has been placed there.

Speaking on the occasion of the presentation of the new attraction last week, Eliane Birchmeier, who heads the city’s planning department, said that now the car park spaces had gone, and that small trees in pots had been positioned nearby, this new water feature would contribute to a Postplatz being a place where locals and visitors could find a space for relaxation.

Consideration as to the new configuration of the square has been ongoing since 2011. A nice green area with trees was considered originally but large sewage pipes underneath, some so large it is possible to walk through them, meant that this was not possible because of the effects of any roots. Hence trees in pots have been put in place and this water feature erected.

Designed and built by local suppliers, it works through water pressure; no electricity is needed at all. It has a water tap for thirsty passers-by and an amusing water vapour function which is sure to delight children. What is more, as no underground structure is needed, it can be removed if additional space is required, meaning Postplatz can be used for multi-functional purposes.

In fact on Saturday 14 September a Postplatz Festival is planned with a speech to be given at 11 am by the mayor of Zug, Karl Kobelt. There will be lots of attractions for children such as painting and drawing with the maintenance depot organising a planting session, too. In addition, a bar will be available from 10 am until11 pm, a risotto lunch duly provided courtesy of the city, and musical entertainment provided.
