Violent thunderstorm front with hail moves over the canton

More than 200 reports were received by the Operations Control Centre after the heavy hailstorm. The fire brigades were in continuous operation. Fortunately, there are no reports of people being harmed

On Monday evening (21 June 2021), around 6:45 p.m., a strong thunderstorm reached the canton of Zug, bringing hailstorms with it. Within an hour, several cellars, underground car parks and streets were under water in the municipalities of Risch, Hünenberg, Cham, Zug, Baar and Neuheim. Some trees and construction site signs were knocked over and blocked traffic routes, as well as a section of the A4 motorway between Küssnacht and Rotkreuz, which had to be closed for a short time. The Operations Control Centre received a total of 220 messages, and the fire brigades of the affected communities were in continuous use. No people were harmed.

Several cars got stuck in the water masses at the railway underpasses on the Chamerstrasse and the Gubelstrasse in Zug, in the roundabout at the motorway exit in Rotkreuz and at the motorway underpass of the A4 in the direction of Küssnacht/SZ. Due to the large masses of water, the Zug/Lucerne motorway entrance and the Hünenberg/Rotkreuz exit had to be temporarily closed.

Members of the fire brigades of Risch, Hünenberg, Cham, Baar, Neuheim were in action, as well as the Volunteer Fire Brigade (Freiwilligen Feuerwehr) Zug, which partly also provided support as a base fire brigade.

As can be seen from the photos, there was no getting through in many places, either by car, bike or on foot

Due to the storm, there were delays, train cancellations and diversions on the railways for several hours on Monday evening. The most affected was the train traffic around Rotkreuz, as the station was under water due to the violent thunderstorm. Rail traffic had to be partially suspended.

On request, the Zug police could not provide more precise information, either in the early evening or in the late evening. According to reports by PilatusToday and Tele 1,they do not yet have an overview of all damage reports., the extent of the damage can therefore probably only be estimated in the course of Tuesday.
