Using discarded water pipes to provide temporary accommodation

An example of what can be done with a large unwanted water pipe is currently on exhibition at the Zug Fair, which continues until this Sunday.

It was during the recent extensive water drainage work in the city that engineer Dieter Brendel by chance noticed six large 25-tonne sections of water pipe imported from Germany which were no longer required; he was able to have them without charge as they would otherwise simply have been disposed of. As to what price these could have gone for on the open market, Brendel did not say.

He had the idea to use them to provide a simple form of accommodation and it is an example of this which can be seen at the Zug Fair. As can be seen in the photograph, the accommodation is single room only but all the essentials are there, with underfloor heating, bathroom, loo, shower, cupboards, fridge, a table, and sofa-bed, all fitted out by the Brändle firm of joiners in Zug, making use of a variety of materials such as wood, stone, glass, metal or synthetic materials.

Put together a few of these accommodation units together and you have a type of hotel and indeed this is a project which is currently in the planning stages for a site in Steinhausen. Brendel was thinking that an app could be developed so that the locks could be activated by the clients prior to their staying in these simple, but stylish and attractive, rooms.
