Unicorns season ends with two defeats in Zurich

The Hünenberg Unicorns travelled to Zurich for the first games of the playoff semi-finals, and met the very strong second team of the Barracudas. The Barracudas finished the regular season with the best record in the league, and have a large squad depth, with 17 players present. By contrast, the Unicorns were missing seven players on Sunday, including two regulars, Franklin Chavez and Marvin Müller. But the Unicorns were also ready to fight for a win.

The Unicorns took a 1-0 lead in the first innings, with back-to-back doubles from Bilmanio Castillo and Reinaldo Reyes. Kieran Brot started as a pitcher for the Unicorns and, despite having enjoyed a strong season, struggled with the placement of his throws from the very start on Sunday. The defence behind him also struggled, and made numerous mistakes. The strong team of the Barracudas took advantage of this situation, and gained a big lead. Although the Unicorns' strong offence briefly shined, the first game was a clear thing. The final score was 19:2 for the Barracudas.

Castillo scored the first run for the Unicorns
The second game had a similarly fast start as the first game. Castillo was hit by the game's first pitch, but then stole second base and was able to advance to third base thanks to an error by the Barracudas. Castillo then scored the first run for the Unicorns after a flyball from Reyes. Michael Bini was on the field as the pitcher in the second game. He struggled in the first inning, but improved steadily and finally showed a good performance. The Unicorns' offence was kept at bay by the Barracudas' strong defence, however, and the team ended their season with a 10-2 loss in the second game.

Coach Steven Murphey reflected on the Unicorns' season: "Of course we wish the season had ended better, but there are a lot of positives to take with us. We won twice as many games as we did last season. The Unicorns have also integrated many new players into the team, who have made an important contribution to the club. So there's a lot we can look forward to next season."
