Three men beat up a taxi driver

Three young men assaulted a taxi driver in the city of Zug last weekend, seriously injuring him. The suspected assailants were identified and have been arrested.

On the night of Saturday, May 30, shortly after 1 a.m., the emergency control centre of the Zug law enforcement authorities received a report that a brawl was underway at the Bundesplatz in the city of Zug. When the first police patrol arrived at the scene, the emergency services found an injured taxi driver lying on the ground behind his vehicle. The 60-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Verbal altercation, then kicked
According to the investigations so far, the alleged assailants stopped the taxi on Gotthardstrasse, by the Bundesplatz. After a verbal dispute inside the vehicle, the young men got out of the taxi, and one of them opened the boot of the taxi. The taxi driver then also got out and a brawl ensued. The 60-year-old driver was first punched on the head and was then kicked as he lay on the ground, according to the press release. Two people in an oncoming vehicle witnessed the incident, and intervened with bravery, thereby preventing anything worse. The three alleged perpetrators then ran away in the direction of the Gotthardstrasse.

The immediate investigation led the emergency services to the trail of three suspects. These were identified thanks to, among other things, CCTV footage in public spaces, and were arrested on the following days. They are an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old Swiss and a 19-year-old German, who lives in the canton of Zug.

The public prosecutor's office of the canton of Zug has opened criminal proceedings against one of the men for attempted grievous bodily harm, and against the other two parties for simple assault. The young men have now been released.
