The Saturday market has reason to celebrate

The Samschtig-Märt is one of the beloved Baar traditions. Loyal customers will receive gifts on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

Every Saturday from mid-March to the end of October, village idyll reigns in the square in front of the Rathus-Schüür. The Samschtig-Märt (Saturday market) is a popular meeting place for many people from Baar, who come to buy local and regional products or to discuss the latest news from the village in the Schüür-Kafi and make a cosy start to the weekend. Little has changed since the first appearance of the Samschtig-Märt on April 4, 1981, according to the press release of the municipality of Baar. The Märt has become a beloved tradition, and can now celebrate its 40th anniversary.

The best recipes for market drivers
The Märt will start its anniversary season on Saturday, 13 March. Vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, cheese, honey, syrup, eggs, baked meats or bouquets are offered from 8.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. As soon as the corona protection measures allow it, the atmosphere of a Märt-Zmorge (market breakfast) can again be enjoyed in the Schüür-Kafi, either before or after shopping. The Samschtig-Märt thus remains true to its recipe for success, even in the anniversary year – and loyal customers are also being given recipes as a gift, and, on the occasion of the anniversary, customers can collect points with a card. There is a stamp for every purchase from CHF 10 or from CHF 20 respectively. The card is filled when the purchase value reaches CHF 400. Full cards can be exchanged in the Rathus-Schüür for a braided shopping basket – decorated with a Samschtig-Märt plaque – or a Market Anniversary recipe brochure, in which the Baar market traders reveal their best recipes: elderflower strawberry dessert, spaghetti with fish tartare, pea and mint soup or spelt bread rosemary sprig, to name just a few delicacies.

Surprise stand and music
An important part of the anniversary programme, there is a ‘surprise stand‘ that changes every week. The Christchindli-Märt (pre-Christmas market) 2020, which was cancelled due to Corona, will be made up in stages in stages during the 2021 anniversary season. At every Samschtig-Märt, a loyal market trader from the Christchindli-Märt family will present their own products. The anniversary programme is rounded off with the well-known and popular Märtplatz concerts, which are organised by the Home and Culture Commission of the municipality of Baar. Their implementation depends on the corona protection measures. The concert program starts in mid-April, will be located at the Samschtig-Märt and will published each time on the baar.ch. website

Flowers instead of barrier grids
The anniversary is also an incentive to avoid plastic as completely as possible at the weekly market. Compostable organic bags were introduced last year, and vegetable bags made of recycled material are now also available, as well as linen bags for bread. The vegetable bags are provided free of charge on some market days, including the opening day on 13 March. They can also be purchased for a small fee. As soon as the corona protection measures allow the opening of the Schüür-Kafis, special items for the anniversary will also be offered there. An anniversary drink and an apéro board are currently on the menu. The barriers, which were necessary because of the corona pandemic in order to direct the flow of visitors, have been replaced by a sustainable, flowery pallet constructions. In this way, the enchanting Märt atmosphere is preserved.
