The city will also reduce Christmas lighting

The city council has adopted a series of energy-saving measures. Among other things, the period of the Christmas lighting will be reduced. As a result of this and other measures, the electricity demand is to be reduced by around 10% by the end of March.

The residents of Zug can once again enjoy a city illuminated by Christmas lights this year – but only from 5.00 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. Electronic Christmas lighting In front of and inside the buildings of the Zug municipality will be completely dispensed with. These are two of several measures that the City Council of Zug decided on Tuesday, 4 October.

The Christmas lights in public spaces are normally in operation for eleven and a half hours a day. The restriction to four and a half hours thereby enables a saving of around 60 %, and corresponds a savings of about 19 equivalent households, as the city of Zug writes in a statement.

The city of Zug is, however, hoping to achieve the greatest savings from a reduction in temperature in public buildings, such as administrative buildings, schools and sports facilities. According to the statement, temperatures will be lowered to 20°C in a first step. A further reduction to 19 °C is conceivable, and even down to 16 °C in sports halls and workshops.

Other cost-cutting measures include lowering the water temperature in swimming pools (from 28°C to 26°C), changes to the infrastructure in public buildings, and the granting of licences for energy-intensive and non-essential events.

The measures adopted are aimed to reduce electricity demand by 10 % by the end of March 2023. This corresponds to the austerity efforts equivalent to around 400 households, as the city of Zug writes.
