The Cantonal School Menzingen is looking for teachers

Lecturers in English, theatre and mathematics: the Cantonal School Menzingen (KSM) has advertised no fewer than nine positions for the coming school year, as can be seen in the Zug Amtsblatt (Official Journal of Zug). “The entire scope corresponds to about six full-time positions,” says Rector Gabrijela Pejic-Glisic, putting everything into perspective. There are several positions in different areas, and in different working percentages, and there are several reasons for this. The rector speaks of natural fluctuations, for example, with four people retiring and several others leaving the school, and successors must therefore be found. The KSM is still growing, she adds. She has been running the school since August 2019. "We are expecting at least two additional classes in the next school year."

Another reason for looking for teachers is that computer science will be taught as a new basic subject from the next school year. "In order to ensure that we will have enough IT teachers at the school in the future, some teachers will be reducing their current workload and completing additional training courses over the next few years, which will then enable them to teach IT."

This introduction should not change the basic alignment of the school, she adds. “As a high school, the Menzingen Cantonal School places great emphasis on a broad general education. We also attach great importance to a broadly based range of subjects in the major and supplementary area.” Specialised and supplementary subjects are already offered in the fields of linguistics, science and art.

The workload of the advertised positions varies widely. The jobs with a workload of around 15% are particularly interesting. A lecturer for creative design is being sought, with a workload of 15% to 25%. There is also an opening for a psychology teacher with a 15% workload. This is also the case for the advertised position for teaching German (15% to 30%) or as a lecturer in theatre (15% to 30%). "That's about four to eight lessons a week," explains the rector. A teacher often teaches several subjects, so that their workload is actually significantly larger.

Around 80 teachers are currently teaching at the Menzingen Cantonal School.

24 lessons make up a 100% workload, which in turn corresponds to a 42-hour week. Around 80 teachers teach around 550 students at the KSM. And they apparently like working in Menzingen. "Thanks to the good working atmosphere, a committed staff and a modern infrastructure with a personal workplace, many teachers spend a lot of time at the school."

Things are much quieter at the Cantonal School in Zug, where 195 teachers are currently employed. "There have been practically no changes in the non-teaching staff over the past five years, and there has been an average of two changes per year in the teaching staff," says Rector Peter Hörler. Here too, he points to a natural fluctuation. This is higher in the case of temporary teachers due to the operational processes. Recruitment of teachers for the next school year in Zug will also start in February. “It’s related to the planning of the work. This usually begins at the beginning of the second semester and lasts until the end of the current semester,” says Hörler. Rector Hörler is also familiar with the smallest working percentages of 15%, as advertised for the KSM. "This can happen every now and then due to the initial situation, for example a replacement solution for a year."
