Status of the promised 100 affordable, age-appropriate small apartments

The local Social Democratic Party (SP) submitted an interpellation to the Baar municipal council in December regarding the current status of the "Housing for Seniors" projects.

The interpellation that the Baar SP submitted to the municipal council (Gemeinderat) in the first week of December is titled "Housing for senior citizens by the end of 2025 – the current status and perspectives" (Wohnen im Alter per Ende 2025 – aktueller Stand und Perspektiven).

 According to a recent press release, the party is demanding transparency with regard to the actual progress of the implementation of the "Housing for Seniors" strategy (WIA: Wohnen im Alter) by the municipality of Baar.

"Baar's population is aging rapidly: By 2040, the number of people over 65 is projected to have increased by 74%," the party writes. It’s already evident that affordable and age-appropriate housing is scarce in the municipality.

Concrete goals – unclear status
The WIA strategy, which was adopted by the municipality in 2020, sets binding targets:
- 100 affordable, age-appropriate small apartments and 50 additional apartments in the standard local price range by 2027 at the latest;
- 30 barrier-free units in the "assisted living" sector by 2025;
- and an action plan, which was supposed to emerge from the Participatory Process of 2021.

"It remains unclear to the public, however, how many of these apartments have been built, or are at least in the planning stages," says the Social Democratic Party (SP). The question of which specific measures from the announced action plan have been implemented also remains unanswered. The SP is therefore demanding an updated overview and a transparent presentation of the current status.

A particular concern for the SP is the loss of housing in old age, for example, due to renovations, evictions, or rent increases. "The Social Democratic Party (SP) wants to know what support the municipality offers in such cases, whether there are any transitional solutions, and what role advisory centres like the Falter Support Centre (Anlaufstelle Falte)r play."

The interpellation will be addressed at the municipal assembly in June 2026.
