Several trees will have to be felled
Several elm trees near the Burg playground in Hünenberg have become a safety hazard. The municipality is now taking drastic measures.
The elm trees by the Burg playground in Hünenberg have become a safety hazard and will have to be removed: according to the municipality, several elm trees are in such poor condition that they will have to be felled.
The elm trees have been showing signs of poor vitality for some time, as the municipality writes in a recent statement. Large amounts of deadwood were already removed during a maintenance operation two years ago, but the condition of the trees has deteriorated further since then, and attempts to save them have, unfortunately, proved to be a failure.
The trees are located outside the Burgwald forest, between the playground and the properties on the Burgstrasse. Their immediate proximity to the Burg playground, the pavement, and the road makes their continued existence impossible.

Pedestrian crossing to be temporarily closed
Weather permitting, the trees will be felled on 13th and 14th January, as the municipality announced. Closures and restrictions may ne necessary in the affected area during the work. The pedestrian crossing over the Drälikerstrasse and the parking lot at the Burg pumping station (Pumpwerk Burg) will be closed. The municipality of Hünenberg asks residents and visitors for their understanding.
Finally, those responsible for the drastic measure have found a silver lining: there are already some young, viable tree shoots at the locations where the trees must be felled. "After the intervention, these trees will receive more light and space to thrive. And this will promote natural regeneration," the municipality writes.
