Sensors help search for a parking space

Thanks to a new display, motorists on the lower Zugerbergstrasse can see how many free parking spaces are still available at the valley station of the Zugerberg mountain railway.

When the sky is grey down in the city, but blue on the top of Zugerberg, the people of Zug often like to ride up there with the Zugerberg mountain railway. In cooperation with WWZ, the city of Zug is now offering a new service for those day trippers and winter sports enthusiasts who travel to the Schönegg valley station by car, according to a recent media release. The number of free parking spaces by the mountain railway valley station at Schönegg is now indicated on a small digital display mounted immediately above the information panel for the Altstadt-Casino parking garage, on the lower Zugerbergstrasse.

If all the spaces are already occupied, they can instead park in the Altstadt-Casino car park, and then take the bus to the Schönegg valley station.

The number of parking spaces that are currently free at the valley station of the Zugerberg cable car is now displayed digitally above the information panel at the entrance to the Altstadt-Casino parking garage.

The occupancy of the public parking spaces at the Schönegg valley station of the Zugerberg cable car is reliably determined with magnetic and ultrasound sensors. These sensors then transmit the current status (free or occupied) using the LoRaWAN technology via the WWZ network infrastructure. WWZ and the city of Zug see many future-oriented applications using the LoRaWAN technology for wireless data transmission. The technology has extremely low energy consumption and thus guarantees very long operating times for the battery-operated sensors.
