Seen around Zug: Like something from another world
You have to look at it two or three times: what's going on? An oversized something that looks like a mutated Barbapapa with rolls of fat, or a self-made part of the Michelin man snacks away at the light.
This faceless creature seems bizarre to the viewer - with a certain ‘Ugh’ factor. The very name "Myzot Nachtwächter (Night Watchman)" suggests something alien. The 1,200-kilo object invites you to touch it, because it’s made of the finest Laaser marble, which is very pleasant to the touch.
As if he wanted to swallow the light: The “Myzot Night Watchman” by Venkse & Spänle.
It is one of the most original works of art in the public space of the City of Zug, and is the work of the German sculptor couple Julia Venske and Gregor Spänle, whose art can be found around the world and has a high recognition value. They showed a selection of their work at Silvan Fässler Fine Art, in its former showroom in the Zug suburbs, in October 2015. On their request, the city granted permission to place the Myzotes on the Rössliwiese for three weeks. The couple are known for their quirky marble creatures, which come in different shapes and sizes, and the giant Myzot belongs to the night watchman genus. Viewer can imagine for themselves who or what they are. The ‘night watchmen’ scan their surroundings with their suction cups. And our Myzot has just found a street lamp, and is inspecting it. The creators of the Myzotes jhjave given their creatures friendly characters - so there’s no reason to be afraid of it.
Following the “Die Anderen (The Others)” exhibition at Silvan Fässler in the autumn of 2015, the Zuger Kantonalbank acquired the Myzotes from the artists and placed them on the green space belonging to the KB at the lower end of Postplatz, opposite the government building. He continues to suck on his lamp there.
