SBB provisionally planning to build 700 flats on three sites in the canton

It has been announced that the SBB company is provisionally planning to build some 700 affordable flats in three major developments in the canton over the next 16 years.

The developments involved include the L+G site and Ökihof area in Zug, in addition to near the station in Rotkreuz.

In addition to running most of the country’s railways, the SBB is also the second largest property business in Switzerland and it is in this latter area in particular it wants to invest.

According to an article in the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper published at the end of July, Alexander Muhm, who heads SBB’s property division, 10,100 flats were planned to be built across the country by 2035, with some 1,600 already under construction.

Apparently, the company is spending between CHF 10 and 15 million a year on acquiring appropriate sites, such as post office buildings near stations.

As mentioned, the SBB is looking to build some 700 flats in the canton of Zug, the company’s spokesman, Martin Meier, explaining that the possible developments here were at the Zug Foyer on the L+G site and at the Kirschloh site near the Ökihof as well as at the station in Rotkreuz. He emphasised, however, that the plans were not yet concrete, though it had been agreed one third of all the flats built should be “in the affordable category”.
