Sayonara through origami

A most striking part of a school-leaving project in creative design was exhibited by final year Cantonal School student Kanna Yamaguchi last week.

As can be seen in the photograph, she created a thousand cranes through origami, the Japanese art of folding paper, filling a room at the Cantonal School with them.

As the pupil herself explained, in Japanese culture, cranes represent happiness and a long life. She mentioned how she had always wanted to create a senba zuru (1,000 cranes) in this way and thought this was the perfect time, as she felt she would not have the time later.

While she said it took her between one and two minutes to make one crane, folding 1,000 took about 30 hours, though she confessed to not making all of them herself.

The display was actually open to the public last Friday but has since been removed.
