Police to close roads in favour of pilgrims

Many Zug residents like to hike to the monastery village of Einsiedeln on Ascension Day, 26 May. To ensure their safety, the Zug police are closing various roads to traffic.

The national pilgrimage to Einsiedeln on Ascension Day (26 May 2022) is one of the traditions that is still upheld in the canton of Zug. Experience has shown that many people from Zug walk to the monastery village of Einsiedeln in groups or in official pilgrimage processions on the night before and on Ascension Day. To ensure the safety of the participants, the Zug police will be restricting traffic on the respective roads. The police thereby ask pilgrims to follow the instructions of the regulatory bodies, as well as to keep to the official routes and marked paths. They also recommend that pilgrims who set out while it is still dark should wear reflective clothing or illuminated gaiters. Other road users are asked to exercise particular caution.

The official pilgrimage processions start from Oberägeri and follow the municipal Gulm - Grod – Zigerhüttli - Raten route. The pilgrims assemble from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the Raten Pass, and then continue their journey over the Aegeriried. From Oberägeri, the Hiking Trail Commission (Wanderwegkommission) will indicate the old pilgrimage route via St. Jost. This route is also recommended for unofficial groups of pilgrims.

The Zug police will apply the following traffic restrictions for 26 May 2022, from 07:00 to 11:30 a.m.:

- Closure of municipal and corporate roads in Oberägeri for through traffic: on the section Gulmstrasse - Grodstrasse - Moos - Zigerhüttli - Raten
