People of Zug enjoy highest disposable income in country

According to a recent survey conducted by the GfK market research company of Rotkreuz, the people of the canton of Zug enjoy the highest disposable income in the country, at almost EUR 61,000 (CHF 68,707), way above the national average of EUR 42,067. International comparisons showed that the Swiss average was also considerably higher than in neighbouring countries such as Austria, at EUR 24,067, and Germany at EUR 23,779.

The figure for Zug means that, on average, locals here have 45 per cent more money in their purses than those who earn only the Swiss average. In second place in Switzerland came the people of Schwyz, at EUR 56,092, the people of Nidwalden coming in third place at CHF 52,620.

However, bearing in mind the populations of these three cantons are relatively low, they only account for just over five per cent of the spending power enjoyed by the people of Switzerland as a whole, compared with the 20 per cent made up of that enjoyed by the people of the canton of Zurich (fourth in the list), though naturally this latter canton does have a much higher population, of 1.5 million in fact.

GfK explained that the figures they came to were worked out based on net income, including that from investments and support from the State such as pensions, unemployment benefit and allowances for children. Not included, however, were cost of living expenses, insurance contributions, rent and ancillary costs such as those for gas and electricity, clothing and savings.
