One in three Swiss have cancelled their holiday trip

Nearly three-quarters of Swiss people have planned a trip this year, according to a survey by Lucerne University of Applied Sciences. Half of them are sticking to their travel plans. One in three Swiss people has put their plans on hold because of the Corona crisis.

If the cable cars are allowed to run again in the summer or a trip to Italy or Spain is allowed once again, 38% of the Swiss citizens surveyed will take holidays as planned, according to a survey conducted by the Institute for Communication and Marketing (IKM) of lucerne University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Luzern).

A third have cancelled the trip or will travel to another location, CH Media newspapers reported on Monday. In particular, trips to southern Europe (16%) and Central Europe (15%) were affected. The remaining 28% of those surveyed had no travel plans.

More local tourism? According to a survey, Swiss people are now likely to spend their holidays in their own country as a result of the Corona crisis.

The profiteer from the wave of cancellations will be the tourism country of Switzerland. This is crucial for many tourist regions, as the effects of the Corona crisis mean that no, or only a few foreign guests are allowed to spend their holidays in Switzerland.

Important groups, such as from Asia and the US, are likely to disappear completely. This will affect Central Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland more than Graubünden, where the proportion of Swiss tourists was already been large. Domestic guests will  now become even more important, writes  the CH-Media newspaper.

The IKM of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences surveyed 1,003 people throughout Switzerland. The institute was investigating how the pandemic has changed the consumption and leisure behaviour of the population.
