New pedestrian passage for Gotthardstrasse in Zug

From next Sunday, the railway line between Oberwil and Arth-Goldau will be completely closed for 1.5 years (see separate article today). At the same time, the SBB will be refurbishing around 80 objects such as bridges, tunnels, underpasses and culverts – including some in the City of Zug.

A number of structures within the city of Zug will be renovated or renewed by the SBB, working together with the city authorities. According to the urban building department, work on the Widenstrasse underpass in Oberwil will be carried out in the autumn, and the Räbmatt underpass will be renovated from January to May 2020. The major works in the urban areas between Zug and Oberwil will follows from the spring of 2020. The city is involved in work on the Mänibachstrasse underpass, the Hofstrasse bridge and the passenger underpass on the Gotthardstrasse.

The latter will be renovated from April to October 2020 as part of the infrastructure measures at Lake Zug East, as can be seen from the building application that will be publicly available until 12 June.

The City of Zug will make use of the time window in the SBB measures to implement the construction of the planned new pedestrian passage, explains city engineer Jascha Hager. "The construction work can thereby be carried out without having to take a running railway operation into account”. The SBB bridge will be structurally unchanged, but will be provided with a new corrosion protection by the SBB.

As part of the City of Zug project, a pedestrian passage will be created next to the current underpass. This will replace the small pavement on the street side, which narrows the Gotthardstrasse. “The new pedestrian passage will increase safety for all road users. The situation on the Gotthard road will also be improved for cyclists," says the city engineer. Apart from the use of the SBB time window, the new construction of the passenger underpass will have no connection with the Lake Zug East SBB project.
