Margrit Schnarwyler celebrates her 100th birthday

Fittingly on a sunny Sunday: Margrit Schnarwyler celebrated her 100th birthday on 6 April 2025, at the Mülimatt senior centre in Oberwil bei Zug in the presence of her family.

Mayor (Stadtpräsident) André Wicki conveyed the congratulations of the City Council and a bouquet of flowers. And we would also like to congratulate her on her milestone birthday.

Margrit Schnarwyler was born on 6th April 1925 in Buttisholz in the canton of Lucerne, as the canton of Zug announced on Monday. Growing up in a farming family with six siblings, she describes her childhood as thoroughly happy - characterised by the warmth and care of her parents. A heavy blow of fate hit the family early on: Margrit's father died at the age of just 33.

Even as a young girl, she was full of zest for action. She attended primary and secondary school in her home village and then energetically lent a hand on her parents' farm. ‘Taking on responsibility was a matter of course for her - and remained so throughout her life,’ writes the city council in its tribute.

She met her future husband at the age of 20. Three years later, the wedding bells rang in Lucerne. It was the beginning of a path together that was characterised by four children, a move to Walchwil and many happy years. While her husband worked for a concrete products company in Lucerne and later in Zug, Margrit was the heart of family life: she brought up the children with patience and joy, ran the household with dedication and, with her green fingers, ensured a flourishing garden.

She was known In Walchwil as ‘Aunt Gritli’ - a woman who had her heart in the right place and always had an open ear for others. Even after the death of her husband in 2011, she remained lively and full of confidence. The love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gives her strength to this day.

The jubilarian formulates her guiding principle for her life as follows: ‘Be good to yourself and love the people around you.’
