On Wednesday evening at around 8:15 p.m., a man entered the track area in Oberwil in order to retrieve his dog, which had run onto the tracks. At the same time, a EuroCity train approaching from the city of Zug was arriving. As a result, both the man and the dog were struck by the train, according to the Zug law enforcement authorities.
The impact threw the 40-year-old man aside. After receiving initial medical treatment at the scene, he was transported by the Zug emergency medical services to a hospital outside the canton with serious injuries. The dog succumbed to its injuries at the scene.
The accident caused delays in rail traffic. Passengers on the affected EuroCity train had to continue their journey on another train.
The incident involved the volunteer fire brigade of the city of Zug, staff from the Zug emergency medical services, SBB personnel, and several patrols of the Zug cantonal police.
Safe behaviour near railway tracks
Trains often approach faster and more quietly than expected. In addition, they have a long braking distance and cannot avoid obstacles. The Zug police therefore point out the following correct behaviour:
- Railway tracks may only be entered at designated crossings.
- Animals should always be kept on a leash and under control near railway facilities.
- If an animal enters the track area, it is important not to put your own safety at risk.
