Major event with multiple food, sporting and other attractions planned for part of former Siemens site this summer

Even though it is three months until what is to be known as a Freiruum (Swiss German for Freiraum (free space)) event opens on Friday 9 August, much preparation work is going on at the Shedhalle in an area in the city where Siemens employees used to work.

Among the events planned are a gourmet food hall with specialities from around the world and lots of sporting opportunities including a “boulder hall” (climbing facility with more than just vertical walls) and a trampolining area.

These are just some of the attractions planned for the temporary use of this building until 2022 until the owners have decided what to do with it.

In addition, there is an events hall for private hire or business purposes with space for as many as 1,700 people, too.

As Markus Kragler (on the left in the photograph), the director of this Freiruum project, explained, some of this space will be available from the middle of this month, with no fewer than 50 parties having already shown interest. With Kragler in the photograph is Michael Federle, the owner of the organising company.

The gourmet area is to be at the heart of the event, for which an area as big as 3,600 square metres is available. In addition to food stands, there will restaurants where food will be served as well as a beer bar. Indeed, various parties have already shown interest in the 16 food stands, three of which are to be in the form of food trucks offering food of the season. What is more, the EVZ Gastro will be running a burger stand, too. There will also be show kitchens where chefs will be demonstrating their skills, with cooking courses available, too, in the afternoons and evenings.

In addition there will be wine cellars on hand for inspection and a coffee lab with beans roasted on the spot. For lovers of cigars, a special lounge is being set up, too, just for them.

In the middle of all this, yet away from the hustle and bustle, there will also be co-working rooms for free use by individuals or businesses and two seminar rooms, too, all with water electricity and WLAN provided.

With the boulder room covering as many as 900 square metres, it will be one of the biggest in Switzerland. As mentioned, there will be the opportunity to go trampolining, too, with a special sports area and picnic zone for the under-fives, though there will be an admission charge for this.

If all this were not enough, there will be areas set aside for workshops, readings exhibitions and concerts, for which many artists and local bands have already shown interest. As Kragler, who has much experience in making use of premises available only temporarily, in Zurich and Bern for example, further explained, theatre groups will also be involved.

The main idea behind it all, of course is for people of Zug to come and enjoy themselves and get to know each other.

With this being such a huge event, no fewer than three opening days are being planned, namely on 9, 10 and 11 August. An open day prior to the summer holidays is also planned, so people can get an idea of all they can look forward to.
