Local Coop to close for almost 8 weeks

The Coop Hünenberg has announced that it will be closing for modernisation work on 1.00 pm on Saturday, 30th January, and will only re-open on Wednesday, 24th March – a period of almost 8 weeks. This will leave the area Hünenberg Dorf without a larger supermarket over this period. Branch manager Lucia Röllin advises her customers to visit the nearby branches of the Coop in Cham, Rotkreuz and Steinhausen during this period. The closing was officially announced at the end of last week.

As a consolation to its customers, the Coop Hünenberg will be offering a 20% discount on all goods, with the exception of fresh products, from 28 – 30 January. The Coop has also sent its local Supercard customers a set of vouchers for a free online delivery and additional Superpoints on 3 purchases, valid from 30 January to 24 March. It can be assumed that the modernisation work is being carried out with an eye to the opening of a Migros supermarket in the new village centre (expected to come into operation in early 2022). The Coop branch in Hünenberg was opened in the early 90s, as the first supermarket in Hünenberg

This closing will certainly have an immediate impact on people in Hünenberg, particularly during the current Corona lockdown, where people are being encouraged not to travel. While the other Coop branches can certainly be reached by people with their own cars, they are not particularly accessible using public transport. The nearest supermarket is, in fact, the Spar supermarket in Hünenberg See, but customers will thereby need to take a bus to Cham and then a bus to Hünenberg See. Two bus rides are also needed to visit the Coops in Cham and Steinhausen.

Other possible outlets in Hünenberg Dorf are the Villiger Kiosk (newspapers, beverages and some food items, typical kiosk items), the Landi (large beverage selection, some vegetables and other local food items), the Shell/AutoSuter shop (selection of food and beverages), the local gourmet butcher Limacher (meat products and a small selection of other products) and the Nussbaumer bakery (bread and pastries). All of these are located within walking distance on the Chamerstrasse.
