Last open day of the excavation in the Äbnetwald forest
At the beginning of 2023, remains of walls belonging to an impressive building complex were found in the Äbnetwald gravel extraction area near Cham-Oberwil. The discovery was an archaeological sensation for the canton of Zug.
In 2023, the remains of a large Roman building were unexpectedly discovered during rescue excavations in the Äbnetwald gravel extraction area near Cham-Oberwil. Over the past two years, experts from the Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments and Archaeology (Amt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie) have uncovered around 530 square metres of the large structure. This was recently announced in a press release by the canton of Zug.
The building will now be open to the public for the last time: the office is inviting the public to visit the excavation site as part of Risi AG's Open Doors Day on Saturday, 24th May.
