Inebriated wine thief arrested

On Friday morning, November 1, a resident of a residential apartment on the Hauptstrasse in Menzingen reported a break-in to a cellar. While the facts of the case were being recorded, a heavily inebriated man suddenly entered the scene with a wine bottle in his hand. The 38-year-old was subsequently arrested and had to be hospitalised because of his state of health.

The subsequent investigation revealed that the man had found his way into the underground car park of the property a few days earlier, and had broken into a cellar compartment from there. From there, he stole 31 champagne and wine bottles, including a Dom Perignon and several bottles of Château Mouton Rothschild, with a total value of around CHF 2,000. He then drank the alcoholic beverages on the spot, and stayed unnoticed overnight for several days in a niche of the underground car park. The Swiss citizen, who is resident abroad, has admitted his crime, and has already left Switzerland. He will now have to appear before the public prosecutor of the Canton of Zug.
