Happy shouting around ‘old Greth’
She had to go and fetch him once again, old Greth, and bring her tipsy husband home. He never seems to learn to give up his love of wine. But he shouldn't, because otherwise the children wouldn’t have so much fun collecting plenty of oranges, bread rolls and chocolate by screaming loudly at Greth and her Lölis.
For over an hour yesterday afternoon, there was a continuous “Greth Schällebei” through the Unter Altstadt, accompanied by lively marching music from the guild band. Many a child proudly pushed a full hat or a bag full of gifts in front of them before Greth Schell disappeared in the town hall at 5:07 p.m. and the last two Lölis rewarded the perseverance of the remaining children.

The weather conditions couldn’t have been better, as for all the other carnival events this year: for an hour, hardly anyone missed the winter that hasn’t shown its face yet, any everyone enjoyed the sunshine and the spring-like temperatures.
The guilds were happy too - Güdel Monday is their day. On that day, the carpenters, woodturners and carpenters hold their ‘Bott’, the annual general meeting of the guild, before noon, followed by the Schriinermöhli. The focus is on conviviality, and then the children get their turn.
