Gotthard Pass closed from Friday
With the onset of winter and for safety reasons, the Gotthard Pass and the hiking and cycling trail in Schöllenen will be closed from Friday.
On Thursday, the Federal Roads Office (Bundesamt für Strassen (Astra)) announced that the Gotthard Pass will be closed to traffic from Friday, 7th November, due to winter weather conditions. During the closure, traffic will be diverted via the Gotthard road tunnel, as usual. This means that four Alpine passes in Uri – the Gotthard, the Klausen, the Susten and the Furka – are now closed. The Oberalp Pass will remain open for the time being for vehicles with winter equipment.
The federal government is also closing the hiking and cycling trail in Schöllenen. The hiking and cycling trail was already partially closed after the rockfall on Friday, 19th September and the resulting damage to the infrastructure.
According to Astra, snow dumping sites will be installed above the Teufelsbrücke (Devil’s bridge) next week. Due to this work and the current weather conditions, the trail will now be completely closed.
