Fyrabig bar under new management

The Fyrabig bar re-opened its doors to visitors last Saturday, with the new tenants celebrating the occasion by slaughtering a cow.

It was when Irene Hürlimann (25) and her friend Remo Heinrich (24) both found out that their application to be the new tenants of the Fyrabig bar (the word is Swiss German for Feierabend, or after-work time) had been successful, they immediately bought a cow and subsequently slaughtered it to make sausages for their new clientèle in preparation for the opening at 3pm last Saturday. This is not so surprising when one realises that Hürlimann is a specialist meat saleslady and Heinrich a butcher.

When it comes to the food on offer the pair are keen to avoid that with e-numbers, i.e. substances permitted to be used in food additives in EU and EFTA countries, but provide home-prepared and locally-sourced fayre. In addition to cold dishes, pizzas and “Toast Hawaii” will also be on offer, for example. As for drinks, a basic range will be on offer, but all the usual popular ones will be available.

Hürlimann herself grew up in the municipality and is in fact the niece of one of the proprietors, not that this meant they were the obvious choice to take the place over. “Another couple were chosen at first but pulled out,” she explained.

Speaking on behalf of the owners, Peter Rust said they were delighted with the new tenants and not least with all the energy they were preparation they were putting into it. It was mentioned at this point that the previous tenants had never really felt they were accepted there, as they were not from Walchwil. This is not the case with the new tenants. “They all know me here and this will soon be the case with Remo, too,” said Hürlimann.

As to the bar’s opening times these will be from 4pm until midnight on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, but closed on Sundays and Wednesdays, at least for the first year at any rate.

Of note, too, is that smoking is permitted there.
