From the source of the Sihl river to the mouth
A new trail called the ‘Sihl ErlebnisWeg’ (Sihl Adventure Trail) allows visitors to experience the scenic, cultural and historical diversity along the Sihl river for the first time on a continuous route, according to a recent press release from the organisers.
The trail follows the course of the river for 107 kilometres – from the Pre-Alps in canton Schwyz to its confluence with the Limmat in Zurich – and is divided into seven stages. The trail sometimes runs directly along the water, and sometimes on high-altitude paths with views of the source area or towards the city.
The stages range from challenging mountain tours for experienced hikers to easy walks in idyllic forest valleys. Along the way, unspoilt nature, forests, villages, agricultural and industrial culture alternate, opening up new perspectives on a region that many are only familiar with in parts.
The project was initiated by Peter Marty at the ZHAW (Zurich University for Applied Science) in Wädenswil, and has been implemented in collaboration with the hiking trail organisations of the cantons of Schwyz, Zug and Zurich. The start-up phase was made possible by funding from the Sihlsee Development Concept and regional partners, with the Zurich Cantonal Bank as the main sponsor.
The trail was officially opened on Friday, 5th September, on the Rossberg above Schindellegi. As a hiking destination, the ‘Sihl ErlebnisWeg’ now provides access to a unique river landscape and, at the same time, offers potential for future connections and extensions – it opens up spaces and connects regions, the press release continues.
