Don’t forget: clocks will be set back to normal time on Sunday

Late-risers can rejoice: they can sleep an hour longer on Sunday due to the time change.

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, 25 October: at 3 a.m. in the morning, the clocks will be set back to 2 a.m.. “Normal time" will then apply once more for the next five months.

The impending time change has also revived the political discussions around the abolition of the time change. According to SVP National Councillor Yvette Estermann, however, the abolition will not come about in Switzerland: only half of the signatures required for her initiative have been collected two months before the end of the collection period. The Corona crisis has put a dent in the initiative: "People have other concerns at the moment." The time change is also not the most urgent issue in neighbouring countries.

Will the EU abolish daylight saving time?
Daylight saving time has been in place in Switzerland since 1981. From 1996 onwards, people in all EU countries have also consistently set the clocks one hour forward on the last Sunday in March and one hour back on the last Sunday of October. With the introduction of standard time, the nights effectively become one hour longer, and it gets dark earlier in the evenings.

In March last year, the European Parliament called for the time change to be abolished in 2021. But all the decisions have not yet been made.

You can remember which way the clocks go from the saying “Spring forward, fall back”!
